Luke Matthews case study
In February 2013 half term, I did a week’s work experience in Salamanca organised by Halsbury Work Experience Abroad. My job was in EL TIPO music shop and I stayed at Hotel Gran Via.
It was a little daunting when I arrived at Gatwick airport on Saturday 16th February as everybody appeared to be in groups of friends and I knew no-one else. I chatted to the girl next to me on the flight, but it wasn’t until the coach journey to Salamanca that I really started to make some friends. On the coach, we were asked who we’d like to share a room with at the hotel. I teamed up with a couple of guys from Kingston called Luke and Bona. Once we arrived and had settled into our room, we decided to explore Salamanca.
On Sunday, a group of us went round with our group leader to find out where our work placements were. Mine was closed, so I could only look at it from the outside. I made some good friends in our group and we went to the supermarket to get some food.
My job started on Monday morning and my hours were 10.30 – 12.30 and 5.30pm – 8pm. I arrived promptly at 10.20am. The first morning, I got to know my boss and dealt with the deliveries that came in. Each day I had a bit more responsibility. My jobs were stacking shelves, writing prices, organising deliveries, packing boxes and dealing with customers.
I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience. It was very good for my Spanish, independence and I made some really good new friends. I would highly recommend this opportunity to anyone.
